Cea de-a 89-a ediție a premiilor Oscar a avut loc duminică noaptea. Printre cele mai memorabile momente ale serii s-au numărat premiul acordat lui Jackie Chan pentru întreaga activitate, primul Oscar câștigat de Viola Davis și discursul superb al actriței, dar și momentul de final, atunci când La La Land a primit Oscarul pentru Best Picture, pentru ca mai apoi să îl înmâneze actorilor din Moonlight.
Filmul care a avut parte de cele mai multe aprecieri și premii anul acesta, La La Land, și-a adjudecat și aseară 6 trofee, pentru cea mai bună actriță în rol principal (Emma Stone), cel mai bun regizor (Damien Chazelle), dar și pentru cel mai bun cântec original (City of Stars). Printre câștigători s-au mai numărat Casey Affleck, cel mai bun actor în rol principal, Emma Stone, la secțiunea cea mai bună actriță în rol principal, Mahershala Ali, cel mai bun actor în rol secundar și Viola Davis, cea mai bună actriță în rol secundar.
Warren Beatty și Faye Dunaway au fost cei care au anunțat câștigătorul secțiunii Best Picture, acolo unde, fără niciun fel de surpriză, La La Land a fost declarat câștigător. Câteva momente mai târziu însă, producătorul filmului, Jordan Horowitz, i-a chemat pe scenă pe cei de la Moonlight, spunând că a fost făcută o greșeală:
